Death toll in air force Hercules plane crash reaches 98

Surabaya, E Java (ANTARA News) - The death toll in the Air Force Hercules plane crash that happened at Geplak village in Magetan, East Java, at about 6:20 Wednesday morning reached 98 as of 2 in the afternoon, an Air Force spokesman said.

Until 12.20 on Wednesday, rescue workers had evacuated 105 passengers, 90 of them dead, 10 seriously injured and five lightly injured, commander of the Iswahyudi military airbase in Magetan, East Java, Air Commodore Bambang Samudra, said Wednesday.

The C-130 Hercules with identification number A-1325 crashed into a rice field, a few minutes before landing at Iswahyudi military airbase.

The dead victims included 11 crew members, a ranking Air Force officer, Air Commodore Harsono, and his wife, and three residents of Geplak village whose houses were hit by the ill-fated Hercules plane when it crashed.

The dead victims were evacuated to the Iswahyudi Air Base hospital in Magetan while the injured victims were admitted to Madiun`s Dr. Sudono General Hospital, Samudra said.

The Hercules plane left Halim Perdanakusuma military airbase in Jakarta at 05.30 a.m. carrying 110 passengers and 11 crew members, Samudra said, noting that the US-made plane had a capacity for 120 passengers and 17 tons of cargo.

The Hercules was in a routine trip from Jakarta`s Halim Perdanakusuma airport to Iswahyudi airport in East Java, Makassar in South Sulawesi and the most-eastern province of Papua. (*)
